The signs and symptoms of obesity

It’s easy to dismiss a few extra kilograms as ‘nothing to worry about.’

However, a little extra weight can easily turn into a health risk if left unchecked, and you may start to notice symptoms that can affect your daily life.

The signs and symptoms of overweight and obesity can include:

  • Breathlessness
  • Snoring and tiredness
  • Back and joint pains
  • Low confidence and self-esteem

These, of course, are only a few signs that you are overweight or obese. If you are unsure about your weight, you should book an appointment to see your GP as soon as possible, as the effects of obesity can be debilitating and long-lasting.

Are you short of breath when you shouldn’t be?

Do you get out of breath performing simple tasks? Do you need to stop for a break on short walks?

Breathlessness is a symptom of being overweight or obese that shouldn’t be ignored. If you have gained a few kilograms and need to lose some weight to get your breathlessness under control, you should aim for 2.5-5 hours of moderate intensity physical activity per week.

If you are struggling to lose weight, you should visit your local GP. The doctors are Park Medical Group can give you advice on managing your weight, and can check for any underlying issues that may be contributing to your weight gain.

Does your partner complain of your snoring habits? Do you feel fatigued?

Being overweight or obese can contribute to problems with breathing while you sleep – namely snoring. If you snore and this affects the quality of your sleep, making you fatigued throughout the day, you may be suffering from sleep apnoea

Sleep apnoea is a serious health condition that should be brought to the attention of your doctor. This condition may increase your risk of problems including high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, and heart attack.

Do you have back and joint pains that restrict your movement?

Back and joint pain are common ailments that can affect people of all ages. This issue can be exacerbated if you are overweight or obese. Joint pain and swelling can affect any joint in the body and can be accompanied by stiffness and aching.

If you are suffering from joint and/or back pain and believe your weight could be a contributing factor, book an appointment with one of our experienced doctors at Park Medical Group.

Are you suffering from a lack of confidence and self-esteem due to your appearance?

It is common for people with weight issues to have low self-esteem and self-confidence issues. Your mental health affects all areas of your life, and paired with obesity, can lead to loneliness and isolation.

If you are struggling with your weight and your mental health, you should speak to your GP. It can be difficult to deal with these interconnected issues on your own, and your GP can help to guide you in the right direction and offer support when you are struggling.
